Snowboarding?

MUFC asked:

Well I really got interested in snowboarding and I plan to go to my out of town slopes and try it out. First do you need to take lessons or is it just sliding down? Second what are really good snowboards?(I already seen quite a few burton boards) Is there any certain clothing requirements? Also is it to late to start snowboarding? Also I’m 13 should I use the youth boards?
I want a good quality board that isn’t expensive.

The people that work there will help you determine what board size will be best for you, based on your height and wieght. Dont bother buying a board until you know you will definitely use it and go more then a few times a year.

I would layer, and the amount of layers depends on how cold it is. I would suggest thermals (top and bottom) A t-shirt over the thermal, a hoodie over the shirt, snow pants (those overalls will work, but nice waterproof pants from a ski shop are best. Expensive, so wait till you go a few times before making the investment). If its colder then 20-some degrees, i would suggest an atheletic coat also (you can always remove it if it gets hot. which it does). And of corse, a hat and sturdy gloves.

You can take lessons, but I learned by being abandoned by my friends on the bunny slope :) kinda had to figure it out myself. You probably arent going to pick it up right away, so be patient and stick with it! most people dont pick it up the first time (it took me 3 times to get it!) While others pick it up within a few hours. You are still young so you should be ok :)

no, it’s not too late! i’m 14 and i’m going today for like my 5th time. the board you get depends on your height and weight, i got my board when i was 13 and mine is an adult. i’m 5’9 and my board is a size 154 (they’re measured in cm) definetly take lessons, it’s way harder than it looks. clothing is whatever will keep you warm, i wear snowpants or whatever you want to call them, hoodie, and usually a coat depending on the temp. also make sure you wear wrist guards and a helmet, this cannot be stressed enough! my first time i broke both of my wrists because i wasn’t wearing wrist guards. it’s also important that you know for sure whether you’re goofy or regular footed, i’m left handed and i’m goofy, but it usually doesn’t matter. if you do it wrong then when your’e going down the hill you’ll start spinning around (that’s how i broke my wrists, because i didn’t know that i was standing backwards)

Well, take lessons, or get help from experienced friends. Good snowboard brands, Flow, K2, Morrow, Lib Tech, Burton, Rome, NeverSummer, but they are kinda expensive, so go with LTD, Lamar, Saloman, Sims. Clothes? Wear under armour under some fleece, wear a jacket ontop of all that, some snow pants, and long socks. Its so not to late, i dont think you need a youth board.
