Snowboarding at Snowmass
Jonathan Hayman asked:
Snowmass Colorado provides an ideal spot for snowboarders of any level to cut loose and get some serious air time. One of the best skiing mountains in the world, it is still relatively un-crowded and features amazing trails with varied runs. It’s also the second largest ski resort in Colorado.
There are three terrain parks: Little Makaha, Midway Park and Piepline Park- addressing the needs of all snowboarders from a beginner to an intermediate to advanced.
For beginners, Little Makaha is designed for those ready to try something new-with boxes, rails, rollers, banks and medium-sized bumps. There’s also a beginner’s pipe. Although labeled for novices, Little Makaha is still an ideal place for even intermediates to make their first run of the season.
For intermediate snowboarders, the Midway Park offers more challenging boxes, bigger jumps and a few more twists and turns than Little Makaha.
Advanced riders won’t be disappointed with Snowmass’s Pipeline Park on Sam’s Knob. This hardcore lap starting at Banzai Ridge and finishing at Doddler Bowl features even bigger jumps, quality hits and a superpipe that can be found at the end of the Coney Glade section-opposite of Doddler Bowl.
All three trails provide exciting and challenging courses allowing riders to work on their skills and show off their moves. Pipeline Park is rated one of the most difficult and thrilling in Colorado.
Snowmass Stats:
Bass elevation: 8,104 ft.
Summit elevation: 12,510 ft.
Terrain: 3,132 acres
Vertical rise: 4,406 ft.
Miles of trails: 147
Longest run: 5.3 miles
Average snowfall: 300 inches
Season dates: November 26-April 11 (changes annually)
Lifts: 23
Parks: 3
Pipes: 2
Bed base: 6,000 rentable units
Snowboarding Safety Tips:
- If you’re tired, take a break. The slopes aren’t going anywhere! Studies show that most injuries occur on that last run when riders tend to already be worn out.
- Don’t hit trails beyond your experience level. Make sure you have the proper training before attempting some of the more difficult or advanced courses. Snowmass offers several levels and types of training classes for both skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.
- Respect others and give them their space. If you feel like you’re no longer in control of your speed or course, angle away from others and try to fall on your butt. (Hardly a glamorous landing, I know, but it’s definitely your safest bet-for you and for others as well).
