Snowboarding is an exciting fast paced sport that can take several forms. You can race down the hills or mountains maneuvering quickly or glide and slide down in a rough free style. Snowboarding itself is loosely based on other similar sports like surfing, skateboarding and skiing. Developed just prior to the 1980′s it became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998.

Initially, there was a little animosity between skiers and snowboarders, but over time as the popularity of snowboarding has increased this has been resolved. In most resorts where you find skiing you will also have access to snowboarding at least in one form or another.

Free ride snowboarding is the most common style of the sport. This is in part to its versatility since any terrain available will do. You can do tricks where you catch as much ‘air’ as possible in the jump then do tricks. You can jib, which is, in fact a method of sliding or gliding down rails or other terrain obstacles, however this is done far less than in other styles like free style. It is during free ride snowboarding that the sport shows its relationship with surfing the most. Just as you might see a surfer glide down a wave doing tricks on the board this closely resembles the power of free ride snowboarding.

In free style there may or not be a hill or mountain, but there is grace as the participants find ways to utilize man made terrain features to perform jibs and glides. These features can be anything from jumps, boxes, rails, to any object a track designer can dream up. Jibs and glides refer to how the rider will build power and speed then slide across objects for either a short or long duration frequently performing some other physical stunt while doing so.

The boxes used are objects used that have highly polished surface that allows the rider move very easily. Naturally, this also means that while on the box, rail or other object the rider has no traction so the snowboarder will need to be extremely skilled.

Free style can also be done in half pipe, which is a type of man-made trench-link ditch made of snow. Tricks done in the half pipe are customarily done as the rider moves from one side of the pipe to the other. Free style unlike free ride snowboarding has a look that puts most spectators in mind of skateboarding.

Since there is so much need for balance in free style a soft boot with a very flexible board is the one preferred. Free style riders also prefer shorter boarders and sometimes even file down the edges. The shorter length gives them the ability to make quick moves, change direction and rotate the board faster than with a regular board. Free style takes a lot of practice, but participants who love this activity do not complain much.

Both these styles are part of a fast growing intensely popular sport in which the practice necessary to become a better rider is the fun part.

Snowboarding, simply put, is sliding through snow using a board. This fast growing winter sport is already a rage with about 7 million people currently involved or interested in it and its ever growing popularity is only attracting more and more newcomers. Having made it into the Olympic sports in 1998 where snowboarding turned into an enormous success, this sport has never looked back. Considered to be a relatively easy sport to learn the number of snowboarding “beginners” is on the rise.

Snowboarding beginners, as in any other sport, are advised to sign up for a formal training session as this would cut down their learning curve and make them more confident of mastering the sport. The first step associated with the sport is to purchase (or loan) comfortable and correct clothing as it puts the person in the right frame of mind and is protective of safety. On this front it is advised to get into a loose fitting suit with goggles and gloves. Protection gear in the form of wristbands and a helmet is a must.

Picking up the right snowboard is critical and it should of the right length and width. The most popular styles of snowboarding are freestyle and freeride, the category in which the beginner wants to gain hold determines the type of snowboard to be picked and manufactures cater to both types.

Fixing the bindings is next and to do this correctly requires practice. For strap bindings, toe and ankle are to be strapped until they are comfortable and for step-in bindings it is first required to step in and roll the foot around to ensure that the bindings are safe and sound. Binding front foot first and then repeated with the back foot. To cross check if the bindings are in place it is advised to make a few quick jumps and see that they are not disturbed.

It is a no-brainer to think that snowboarding is now an ever-growing winter sport across the globe. Skateboarding, surfing and skiing are the early sports that inspired the development of this sport. According to history, this sport was developed around the 1960′s to the 1970′s and thus, became a winter Olympic sport in 1998. Since then, people have started to be interested in the sport until such that it is considered one of the most popular winter sports these days.

It comes in different styles. These are jibbing and rail riding, free riding, freestyle and free carve. Jibbing and rail riding involved riding on a snowboard where in riders have to ride over obstacles which are in this case, the rails. The rails could either be natural or made-made. Free riding is another style which is quite different from jibbing and rail riding. This is considered the easiest style in this sport. In free riding, the rider just ride down a terrain which include aerial tricks and jibs. The next is freestyle. This is most sought-out style in this sport. From beginners to professionals, most people want to pursue freestyle. It’s because it’s more about the style of the person given the fact that snowboarding basically known to be giving the rider the thrill of his life and the total freedom to be up there in the air. Technically, in freestyle there are more tricks and more manmade terrain features. The features could either be a trail, a jib, boxes or other features that make it possible for the rider to perform his tricks. The last style is free carve style which is usually determined by the speed and the ultimate carving turns. When practicing for free carving, riders focus on their speed because this style is focused on the race as the riders descend the mountain. Little or no jumps are even required in this style.

Whatever the style is, it is evident that snowboarding is a very challenging sport but worth it. A growing number of manufacturers focus on this sport producing equipment for this sport from the littlest gear to the most important one because of the increasing demand for such equipment too. In the winter and even up to spring, ski resorts are flocked with snowboarding enthusiasts who might be doing it for the experience, for leisure or for their career.

However, snowboarding is undeniably exciting and fun-filled but riders have to understand the risks that they are going to take when doing this sport. There are already so many cases of injury associated with this sport and the whole community wouldn’t want to add to that number. It is then advisable to observe precautionary measures when doing this sport. Riding your gears that could protect you from injury is imperative. Learn to listen to your instructors and of course, always be on guard. With these things in mind while performing your tricks, it’s pretty sure that you will have the time of your life.

Intro
I can only assume you are reading this because you have decided to try snowboarding. Congratulations, you’re already off on the right foot. As with any activity that involves risk, it is always very important to understand what you are getting in to. Before you rush off to buy your own board, there are a few things you should know.

Style
Determining your style is the single most important aspect of buying a snowboard. If your board isn’t suited to your style, your experience will be less than stellar. There are two primary types of snowboarding that the beginner should consider.

1. All Mountain – This style of snowboarding is for the majority of casual snowboarders. If you just want to ride the mountain and stick to the trails, this is most likely your style. All Mountain boarders can range from casual downhill types to off piste knuckle draggers.

2. Park/Freestyle – Park boarders are the ones you see flying high and riding the rails in the terrain parks. This is not a recommended starting point for beginners. It can be very dangerous and difficult. It’s a popular wintertime activity for summer skateboarders as well.

Length
Once you’ve determined what type of rider you will be, choosing a board length is much easier. Boards are all measured in standard centimeters and typically in the name of the board (a Rome Anthem 154 is 54cm tall). Many shops will tell you exactly what length you should have based on your height. Just about at chin level is a standard size. While this can be an accurate idea, it is usually best to factor in a few other things.

1. What kind of snow will you be on – If you are a Midwest snowboarder, you will never see the feet-deep powder of the west coast, Rockies or north eastern slopes. If you’re riding on man-made snow or very shallow snow you will want a shorter board. A longer one will be very hard to control on shallow snow.

2. How much control do you have – If you are new, and I’m assuming you are, you will not want a board that is too long. The longer the board, the harder it is to control.

3. What is your style – If you are going to be shredding the terrain park, you will want a shorter, quicker board. If you are riding on the mountain, you will want a longer board, which offers more stability.

Width
Another big factor in choosing a board is width. Most standard boards support up to a size 10.5 or 11 foot. Above that, a wide board is generally preferred. With snowboard boots on, the toe and heel should extend

Snowboarding has become a competitive sport and has been part of the Olympic Games since 1998. It includes two styles: freestyle and freeride. Freeride is considered the most generalized form of snowboarding. Freeride involves making one’s way down the decent of slopes.

For the purpose of this article, we will focus on freestyle snowboarding.

Freestyle snowboarding refers to the combination of skateboarding, surfing and windsurfing that makes snowboarding more fun and exciting. It requires a lot of practice because despite its free-form, it must be carried out without violating the set of rules on snowboarding. As a professional competitive sports, snowboarding as a whole is administered by the International Snowboarding Federation.

There are different forms of freestyle snowboarding. The categories of freestyle snowboarding include power snow driving, jump, border cross and half pipe. Each of the categories is guided by set of rules and regulations on how it should be executed, and it must be highly observed by the snowboarders.

Despite the funs and thrills that snowboarding gives to the snowboarders, it is also a must in this kind of sport that each and every snowboarder is properly geared since it involves a lot of risks and dangers. The most and number one important gear that a snowboarder must have is the helmet. Helmet protects the head of the snowboarder; it is the only piece of equipment that protects the snowboarder’s head if unexpectedly/accidentally fallen into the hard ground. Therefore, it is always advisable for a snowboarder to wear helmet whether he is a professional or not.

Before engaging into freestyle snowboarding, it is a must that you have read and understand the rules and regulation that comes with. Also, make it sure that you have the proper gear, for safety reason.

When you think of a pro athlete, the type of person that comes to mind is probably an adult. However, with snowboarding, younger people have the upper hand. The main belief is that it takes years of experience before one is thought to be a pro at a sport. Teenagers are much different. While they will advance even more throughout the years, they are much more flexible than their adult peers. Because of this, they are able to amount for many more advanced jumps in a shorter amount of time. Surprisingly enough, many pro snowboarders who are teenagers are not even able to drive a car but they own an Olympic medal. The youngest snowboarders are said to be 13 to 14 years of age.

Snowboarding was actually invented by teenagers. Skiing can become boring for those who are younger and it can also seem quite “Unpopular”, considering that many adults are seen skiing. Snowboarding also attracts a large teen audience because of the teenage pro snowboarders. According to the snowboarding pros, excelling at snowboarding is much easier to do in a short amount of time, compared to the years that it takes to excel at skiing. It is not uncommon for a snowboarding beginner to become an expert in as little as four years.

If you are older in age, do not be discouraged about trying snowboarding. If you have never skied before then you may not want to venture out on the board quite yet. It is much easier to start with skiing first because you have the support of the two sticks that you use to push off with. However, if you are an avid skier, you may find that snowboarding is a great way to improve your balancing skills and your agility out on the slopes. If you find that you enjoy snowboarding so much and you perfect the tricks, you might end up switching to snowboarding completely. Snowboarding will give you much more freedom when it comes to tricks.

Snowboarding, like skiing is a fun and exciting sport that frequently involves racing down a mountain at speeds you might not even see on a bicycle. It would be foolhardy to reach these speeds on the same mountain or hill you are sharing with other riders, skiers, trees, rocks, hard packed snow, and bare frozen ground without a helmet. You need protection here more than other sports because of the power of the turns, maneuvers and tricks often performed in snowboarding. A snowboarding helmet should protect your head your head from injury as much as possible while not interfering with your ability to move your head and neck or blocking your vision in any way.

The proper helmet should fit snugly even before you strap it into place. It should not be too tight and it should not keep you from bringing your head backward in a standing position to at least the top of your back where your shoulders join. You should also be able to see clearly above and below with nothing blocking your vision. Take a few minutes and shake your head to see if the helmet slips down. If it slips down in the store it will slip while you are riding, and it is better to find this out in the store.

Try on a variety of many helmets from several manufactures to get a feel for each of them. This way if you ever want to order from an online site you will have an idea of how different companies market and rate their products. Check each one for comfort and fit. If a helmet does not fit well it will become uncomfortable and this will cause you to have a dangerous urge to take it off. The better the fit to start with, the better chance you will be able to wear it and stay out practicing longer.

Even if you find a helmet you think very well go ahead and buy some padding strips. Padding strips have adhesive on one side and soft padding on the other. If you find some areas are not fitting snuggly enough you can add the padding a strip at a time until the helmet begins to feel more secure. Try the same tests again to make sure you are getting the proper fit and the helmet will not fall off or slip down.

The chin strap is one place where many riders make a mistake with snowboarding helmets. They either cinch them too tight or wear them so loose they do no good. The strap should merely be helping to hold the helmet in place; it should not be what you depend on to keep the helmet in place, or from slipping down. If you find yourself having deep red marks on your chin or throat you are wearing the strap too tightly. On the hand, the strap should not be loose enough to snag anything around you as you are moving. The strap should be firm against the chin without digging into the skin.

Frontside 180 -

1. Before attempting any spin, just practice popping off the jump and get a feel for the landing. You may want to practice riding switch so after you spin you will land regular ensuring better balance for your landing.
2. After figuring out which direction you want to jump, regular or switch, just do it. Once you pop off, spin your front foot backwards while pulling your back foot forwards. Make sure you have enough rotation and air to be able to completely spin 180 degrees.
3. Land with knees bent and board facing downhill. If your upper body is not all the way rotated that is okay. When your board touches down put a little weight on your heel edge to stop the momentum from spinning. Regain balance and control, then ride away.

*Note: A backside 180 is the exact opposite of mentioned above. Spin front foot forwards while pushing back foot backwards.

Switch Frontside 360 -

1. Before trying a switch three, you will need to have a grasp on frontside 180′s. The technique is exactly the same except you spin 360 degrees versus 180.
2. Have plenty of speed when coming to the lip of the jump. When there, start rotation with upper body and pop off your heels. Spin front foot backwards while pulling back foot forwards. Knees to chest, you can possibly perform a grab as well.
3. Remember you will be landing switch, so be comfortable with your spin around 270 degrees and start looking for landing. Now is the time to release the grab if you performed one.
4. Land flat based with both feet and ride away switch stance.

Backside 540 -

1. The prerequisites for backside 5′s are being able to successfully execute a backside 360 and backside 180. Again, you want to be comfortable landing switch and keeping your balance.
2. Set up by approaching the lip of the jump as if you were carving on your toe edge slightly. Keep weight on your toes staying low and prepare upper body to initiate the spin.
3. As your board leaves the lip, pop off your toes starting rotation with your shoulders and head. Remember which direction you are spinning (front foot goes forward and back goes backward for backside spins), rotate your board following your head and shoulders.
4. Tuck your knees to your chest and perform a grab (if you want) as soon as possible while looking over your trailing shoulder.
5. Once you’ve completed one full revolution, glance at your landing zone and make any final decisions in the last 180.
6. After one and a quarter spins (450 degrees), release your grab and lower your legs. Making sure to keep your knees bent a little, land flat based both feet. Once the landing is complete, ride away fakie and scream for joy as you just performed your first backside 540. Be sure to continue practicing until you nail it every time.
