Summer is almost officially over. Supopsedly its snowing already in Utah. I’m getting excited about this upcoming snowboarding season. Anyone know the best places in the north east (New England) early in the season or which one usually opens first? Around what date?

When you think of a pro athlete, the type of person that comes to mind is probably an adult. However, with snowboarding, younger people have the upper hand. The main belief is that it takes years of experience before one is thought to be a pro at a sport. Teenagers are much different. While they will advance even more throughout the years, they are much more flexible than their adult peers. Because of this, they are able to amount for many more advanced jumps in a shorter amount of time. Surprisingly enough, many pro snowboarders who are teenagers are not even able to drive a car but they own an Olympic medal. The youngest snowboarders are said to be 13 to 14 years of age.

Snowboarding was actually invented by teenagers. Skiing can become boring for those who are younger and it can also seem quite “Unpopular”, considering that many adults are seen skiing. Snowboarding also attracts a large teen audience because of the teenage pro snowboarders. According to the snowboarding pros, excelling at snowboarding is much easier to do in a short amount of time, compared to the years that it takes to excel at skiing. It is not uncommon for a snowboarding beginner to become an expert in as little as four years.

If you are older in age, do not be discouraged about trying snowboarding. If you have never skied before then you may not want to venture out on the board quite yet. It is much easier to start with skiing first because you have the support of the two sticks that you use to push off with. However, if you are an avid skier, you may find that snowboarding is a great way to improve your balancing skills and your agility out on the slopes. If you find that you enjoy snowboarding so much and you perfect the tricks, you might end up switching to snowboarding completely. Snowboarding will give you much more freedom when it comes to tricks.

Snowboarding, like skiing is a fun and exciting sport that frequently involves racing down a mountain at speeds you might not even see on a bicycle. It would be foolhardy to reach these speeds on the same mountain or hill you are sharing with other riders, skiers, trees, rocks, hard packed snow, and bare frozen ground without a helmet. You need protection here more than other sports because of the power of the turns, maneuvers and tricks often performed in snowboarding. A snowboarding helmet should protect your head your head from injury as much as possible while not interfering with your ability to move your head and neck or blocking your vision in any way.

The proper helmet should fit snugly even before you strap it into place. It should not be too tight and it should not keep you from bringing your head backward in a standing position to at least the top of your back where your shoulders join. You should also be able to see clearly above and below with nothing blocking your vision. Take a few minutes and shake your head to see if the helmet slips down. If it slips down in the store it will slip while you are riding, and it is better to find this out in the store.

Try on a variety of many helmets from several manufactures to get a feel for each of them. This way if you ever want to order from an online site you will have an idea of how different companies market and rate their products. Check each one for comfort and fit. If a helmet does not fit well it will become uncomfortable and this will cause you to have a dangerous urge to take it off. The better the fit to start with, the better chance you will be able to wear it and stay out practicing longer.

Even if you find a helmet you think very well go ahead and buy some padding strips. Padding strips have adhesive on one side and soft padding on the other. If you find some areas are not fitting snuggly enough you can add the padding a strip at a time until the helmet begins to feel more secure. Try the same tests again to make sure you are getting the proper fit and the helmet will not fall off or slip down.

The chin strap is one place where many riders make a mistake with snowboarding helmets. They either cinch them too tight or wear them so loose they do no good. The strap should merely be helping to hold the helmet in place; it should not be what you depend on to keep the helmet in place, or from slipping down. If you find yourself having deep red marks on your chin or throat you are wearing the strap too tightly. On the hand, the strap should not be loose enough to snag anything around you as you are moving. The strap should be firm against the chin without digging into the skin.

Snowboarding, since it’s introduction in 1965, has become an extremely popular sport – the second most popular winter sport in the United States. It is the fastest growing winter sport in the U.S. Only skiing remains more popular.

With that in mind, more ski resorts than ever are beginning to open up some of their ski slopes for either exclusive or shared snowboarding use. For the beginning snowboarder, looking to learn the basic skills, there will be no shortage of places to practice. But snowboarding is not a natural or instinctive skill, so where do you start?

To being with, you should never try to learn snowboarding by yourself. There’s too much unnecessary chance of injury. You should always find a qualified expert to teach you. Now this qualified expert can be from a structured environment like a snowboarding school or it can be a friend or family member who has been snowboarding for year and has the knowledge and patience to teach. The important thing is to get trained properly.

No one, especially a beginner should feel embarrassed about attending a snowboarding school. Even snow boarding trainers attend classes in an effort to keep up with the latest snowboarding styles, techniques, and safety protocols. The main decision you will have to make is what type of training you want. Most ski and snowboarding resorts will be able to accommodate you in whichever choice you make.

The most popular type of lesson is the group lesson. Group lessons are relatively inexpensive, well organized, and easy to find. Snowboarding group classes are usually divided by skill levels, so choose the beginning group and you will have few problems. Before enrolling check how many participants are expected in the class. More than 8 snowboarders in a class will probably be too many to allow the instructor to give you the level of attention you need.

To further save on money, if you plan in advance, you can often find coupons or discount books that will give you a nice percentage off of the class fee if you enroll in advance and are willing to pay with a credit card.

If you have the money, and feel that you need more support and attention, you can sign up for a private lesson. Of course, private lessons are more pricey. As the only student, however, you can be sure of receiving instructions geared expressly for your skill level. You will also be more comfortable in learning at your own pace as there will be no other students to hold you back.

A nice compromise between group lessons and private lessons is the private group lesson where you and friends can hire an instructor to teach you as a class. This has the benefit of letting you learn in a relaxed environment with friends and while usually more expensive than group lessons, will be much less expensive than private lessons.

The popularity of snowboard Olympic winners like Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Seth Wescott, and others will only increase the popularity of snowboarding itself. Want to see what all the funs about? Sign up for your snowboarding class today.
